OVERVIEW

This outstanding short version trek takes place to the East of Huaraz, those looking for a quitter more accessible & more demanding alternative than Santa Cruz, without compromising on dramatic scenery. It’s one of the best routes for spotting Andean condors, you can camp near glacier, under the gaze giant peaks. The huapi pass is one off the highest pass over 5080 meters, from it offer superb view toward each places where you can see.

Brief itinerary of the trek program Huaraz – quillcayhuanca - cojup – Huaraz

Day 1: Huaraz – pitec 3850m – laguna churup 4450m – pitec 3850m
Day 2: pitec – via quillcayhuanca valley - tullpacocha camp 4250m.
Day 3: tullpacocha camp – guapi base camp 4850m
Day 4: guapi base camp – choko pass 5080m – cojup valley – Huaraz.

SUGGESTION: please understand that before the quillcayhuanca – cojup trek you should complete 2 or 3 acclimatization day hikes to avoid altitude sickness. Ask us for advice or visit our page about acclimatization hikes.

ITINERARY

TREK PROGRAM HUARAZ – QUILLCAYHUANCA – COJUP - HUARAZ

Included meals: B = Breakfast / S = Snack / L = Lunch / D = Dinner

Day 1: Huaraz – Pitec at 4850m – laguna churup (4450m) – pitec (3850m)

After we pick you up at your hotel in our private vehicle, we will drive from Huaraz toward the east side of the mountains (approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes); on the way, we will pass by the villages of Unchus and Llupa, where the land is used for agriculture. The trail to Lake Churup begins in a parking area at 3850 m. while our staff sets up camp at pitec we start hiking upon moderate grade trail with some steep sections; we ascend over the long ridge, where we will usually make some stops to rest; then we approach a steeper and rocky gradient, where the trail changes from a moderate pleasant walk to strenuous ascent across large boulders. This section will get your heart pounding and blood flowing. Last forty minutes of the hike up to the lake are a real scramble on slab rock along a waterfall cascade, the headwaters of which are sourced at Lake Churup. Upon reaching the top of the waterfall, we will behold dramatic Churup Lake at 4450m/14,600ft, which lies just below the equally impressive mount Churup. Lake Churup has an impressive azure color with orange deposit on the surface near the shore. The water of the lake is astonishingly clear allowing you to see the rocky bottom many meters below the surface. The return trip on this hike is via the same path. Overnight camp at pitec. Meals: S / L / D

Day 2: Pitec – quillcayhuanca valalley – tullpacocha camp (4250m)
This day is easy day almost flat terrain, we will hike along lovely & lush green valley of quilcayhuanca, its wider than others, the nevado andavite commands the valley ahead, the main trail keep to the left, after quebrada cayesh cross, the trail swing into quebrada tullparaju and steepens in route to a large pampa and climb to smaller grassy pampa , there the path become indistinct – go to the upper end after passing it we approach to good grassy camp spot, after finishing this grassy pampa the camp spot is located just on a riverside platform. Overnight camp at tullparaju camp. Meals: B / S / L / D

DAY 3: tullpacocha – huapi base camp or bayococha(4850m)
This day we will walk up following the main path that crossing two rivers then climb up several zigzags for one hour to great grassy flat terrain at the base of the moraine enclosing laguna cuchilla cocha. Side trip to laguna cichilla the path go crossing the stream, then climb zigzags until lake then we will back on same route until main path to follow walking toward the camp, the next section after grassy flat terrain is difficult because is quiet steep until reach lake, our camp is located at lakeside of bayococha, the view is spectacular toward the east, six thousand meters peaks imposing the area as: pucaranra, tullparaju, andavite, maparaju, san juan and others. Overnight camp at bayococha. Meals: B / S / L / D

Day 4: bayococha – choku pass (5080m) – cojup valley - Huaraz
After our breakfast, we will start walking upon steep section, until reach the huapi base camp, from it the choku pass is visible to the north-west, the path climb on moderate and steep grade at least for forty minutes after that we start traversing across rocky ground until reach the pass as soon as we approach to the pass the inmense mount Ranrapalca comes into view to the north, while nevado ishinca appears little more than bump on the ridge ahead, the huge massif of palcaraju dominates the head of cojup valley. descent is straight down on steep path until reach the cojup valley crossing the stream we will take the main trail curently is car road, then walk downstream along lush green cojup valley after 7 – 8 hours walking we arrive to entrance or portada of cojup valley. Finish our trek. Where our private transportation will await us to bring Huaraz. Back to Huaraz for a nice shower and some rest; enjoy a good dinner in town celebrating after trekking success. Overnight at hotel. Meals: B / S / L

WHAT TO BRING

WHAT TO BRING FOR TREKKING

    CLOTHING
  • Walking boot or hiking shoes: These are the boots you will wear on the trek over high passes, then you'll need a couple shoes of handling a bit of slippery snow and very rough and rocky trails. For example a B0 or B1 ankle-high boot.
  • For multiday treks is advisable a pair of sandals to wear around camp instead of sneakers
  • A couple of fast drying base-layer tops (made of synthetic material is preferable instead of cotton or wool t-shirt) (whatever material can be long sleeve is advisable)
  • Mid – layer (mid weight fleece or a synthetic insulation jacket (e.g primaloft) as well as full of thermal underwear to wear in the evening.
  • Wear light/medium - weight trousers that allow the free movement and will dry quickly.
  • Down jacket is nice or a micro –down jacket
  • A woolly hat and thermal gloves ( a pair polar Tec)
  • A light weight waterproof jacket shell proof ( gore - tex)
  • A light weight waterproof pants or over-trouser (Gore - Tex) are recommendable.
  • Wind proof waist coat or jacket (optional)
  • Light weight cotton or synthetic pants / trouser: for hiking in the mountains or for hiking around camp Shorts are Ok.
  • A pair of high quality sunglasses is essential (dark sport sunglasses) spectrum 3 for trekking
  • At least 3 pairs of good quality hiking socks (liner sock can be to reduce abrasion and blister.
  • Sun hat: Or baseball cap with bandanna safety pinned to it to keep the sun off your face and neck.
  • Thermal liners
  • Neck gaiter or balaclava (wool or synthetic, mid-weight) the neck gaiter is more versatile and can serve as ear band

  • CAMPING EQUIPMENT

  • Sleeping bag – 15ºC should be enough to sleep well (down or synthetic)
  • Foam sleeping pad or a therm- a – rest (prolite or NeoAir for a better night sleep) which is the best for more comfort at high camp.
  • 2 liters water bottle (Nalgene) or camelback
  • Water treatment (chlorine dioxide tablets) (micro pure) (optional)
  • Headlamp or head torch with extra batteries (we recommended all use LED technology).
  • Good quality sun cream (Sunscreen) for using around the camp
  • Lip balm
  • Insect repellent
  • Pocket knife (optional)
  • Pee Bottle (2) 1 Liter wide mouth bottles (Nalgene) (optional)
  • Thermos (optional) 1 Liter capacity stainless steel vacuum bottle

  • hiking steaks or trekking poles are useful a compact 3 section (leki or black diamond they are lither and durable)
  • Duffel bag or ruck sack(around 60 - 70 liters) with padlock. These duffels will be tied onto the backs of burros on the way up to Base Camp, so make sure they’re tough.
  • A 40 – 45 liters day pack to carry spare clothing, snack, camera and water to drink during the day walk.

  • PERSONAL MEDICAL KID

  • Should include: plasters, antiseptic, cream, sterile gauze and bandage, rehydration sachets, zinc oxide tape and anti-inflammatory painkillers such as ibuprofen or aspirin.
  • Bring paracetamol, and acetazolamide or Diamox for treating mild symptoms of (AMS).
  • Have loperamide is a good idea in case you get the runs
  • Antibiotic such as: ciprofloxacin or Bactrim for bacterial stomach bugs.
  • A small roll of adhesive tape, cough drops.

  • PERSONAL TOILETS

  • Toilets such us: Toothbrush, small amount of toothpaste, dental floss, contact lens fluids, a small bar of soap, and small hand towel or wash clothes.
  • On most expeditions in base camps we can supply you with a small bowl of warm washing water in the morning and afternoon.
  • A small synthetic hand towel (wash clothes) is useful for taking a sponge bath, toilet paper.
