Lake Churup is a ‘jewel’ of a glacier lake, with spectacular deep blue waters encircled by the majestic mount Churup. While this hike is challenging, it offers fantastic panoramic views into the Cordillera Blanca. ITINERARY
Killer view on day hike to Laguna ChurupAfter we pick you up at your hotel in our private vehicle, we will drive from Huaraz toward the east side of the mountains (approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes); on the way, we will pass by the villages of Unchus and Llupa, where the land is used for agriculture. The trail to Lake Churup begins in a parking area at 3850 m.
The first part of path is moderate grade with some steep sections; we ascend over the long ridge, where we will usually make some stops to rest; then we approach a steeper and rocky gradient, where the trail changes from a moderate pleasant walk to strenuous ascent across large boulders. This section will get your heart pounding and blood flowing.
Several waterfalls can be seen on this day hike and Polilepis trees are abundant and form a sharp textural contrast with the surrounding landscape. The last forty minutes of the hike up to the lake are a real scramble on slab rock along a waterfall cascade, the headwaters of which are sourced at Lake Churup. Upon reaching the top of the waterfall, we will behold dramatic Churup Lake at 4450m/14,600ft, which lies just below the equally impressive mount Churup.
Lake Churup has an impressive azure color with orange deposit on the surface near the shore. The water of the lake is astonishingly clear allowing you to see the rocky bottom many meters below the surface. We will find a suitable place on a rock edge to sit down and enjoy lunch and take in stunning views of this gorgeous mountain scenery. While the lake is beautiful in the sunshine, it is at least as impressive when it is cloudy and drizzling; it’s evocative and haunting nature really makes an impression on you and can make you glad you did not see it in the sun. The return trip on this hike is via the same path.
