SUGGESTION: please understand that before the cedros - alpamayo trek – via ulta valley you should complete 2 or 3 acclimatization day hikes to avoid altitude sickness. Ask us for advice or visit our page about acclimatization hikes.

ITINERARY

TREK PROGRAM HUARAZ – CEDROS - ALPAMAYO VIA ULTA – HUARAZ

Included meals: B = Breakfast / S = Snack / L = Lunch / D = Dinner

Day 1: Huaraz - Hualcayan Village (3140m)

After your breakfast we will pick up you at your hotel to drive to the north of callejon de huaylas Valley until reach caraz, then we follow driving until colcas on paver way, from where the road winds up toward east, ascending on several switchbacks until reach hualcayan village, where we will meet with our donkey drivers and donkeys, in the afternoon we can walk in to the village. Overnight camp at hualcayan Meal: S / L / D

Day 2: Hualcayan – Wishcash (4300m)
After our breakfast we will walk upon steep hill but the trail winds up on several switchbacks observing spectacular view to the hualcayan village, where the arable field looks like mosaic, most of it are sown by Andean products. The camping spot offer terrific views west across the Callejón de Huaylas to the Cordillera Negra, further the fantastic view of sunset on cordillera negra is unique. Overnight camp at wishcash Meal: B /S / L / D

Day 3: Wishcash - Punta Cullicocha Pass (4850m) – Osoruri (4450m)
This day we will climb upon moderate grade trail until reach the spectacular azure lake of Cullicocha with panorama view to mount Santa Cruz rising steeply at the opposite end of the lake, after resting & clicking awesome pictures we follow walking up on steep sections, however the trail winds up on switchbacks toward our first high pass to punta cillicocha (4850m), where the mountain scape is really exiting with huge summits & cliffs valleys to the north, then we will descent on slope and rocky trail until our next camp. Overnight camp at osoruri/ Meal: B /S / L / D

Day 4: Osoruri - Vientonan Pass (4750m) - Jancarurish (4250m)
After our hearty breakfast we start walking up on steep hill but the trail winds up on several switchbacks until vientonan pass (4750m), then we will descend on gentle grade down, where mount pilanco dominate the scene to the north, before embarking on a long switch-back descent to the depths of the Quebrada los Cedros valley. We pass the terraced fields surrounding the thatch-roofed, as soon as we reach the cedros valley we keep going on lovely green lush valley observing on the way some ruined structures and ancient standing stones. Eventually, the spectacular pyramid form of Alpamayo (5,947 m / 19,515 ft) comes into view to the southeast at the middle of the valley, which view is constantly until reach the camping spot. Overnight camp at jancarurish /Meal: B /S / L / D

DAY 5: day off.
Option 01: hike to Laguna Jancarurish or explore a view point which is lies on a hill southern of camping spot (it’s a grass plateau on steep hill with splendid vista) for appreciating the photogenic view of mount Alpamayo, which has been considered the most beautiful mountain in the world since 1966 in Munich Germany by “Alpinism Magazine” and this beauty draws climbers from far away, it is deadly beauty.
Option 02: simple take a relax day at the camp site enjoying the photogenic view of mount alpamayo Overnight camp at jancarurish /Meal: B /S / L / D

Day 6: Jancarurish - Cara Cara Pass (4830m) - Mesapata Pass (4500m)- Huillca (4000m)
This day we will cross two passes, can be the most strenuous day of the trek, first crossing the los cedros river then climb up steadily until reach windy Cara Cara pass (4830m), the panorama that awaits at the top should turn luck-of-oxygen gasps into the gasps of amazement, the views remain stunning all the way up to the pass, On the pass we will be on continental divide; where all rivers running west head for the Pacific and those running east drain to Atlantic, via the Amazon, then we descent to climb up again to next pass slightly lower than first one, then the path droops in to quebrada tayapampa until reach the remote mountain valley of huilca. Overnight camp at huillca Meal: B /S / L / D

DAY 7: huillca – Yanacon pass (4600m) – jancapampa (3600m)
This day is imposed by yanacon pass, alpacas presence are abundant in this area the pass is close up views of pucajircas ice and folded rock strata, the view is gorgeous after some rest for shooting panorama memories or eating our snack, then we will descend until our next camp at jancapampa, the first part will be a short descent on steep scree then we walk on green lush valley flanked by quenual forest. At the camping spot in the afternoon usually some Quechua families come to offer their products as beverages (soda or beer), we can buy as a symbol of friendship, which is a way to make money for them. Overnight camp at jancapampa Meal: B /S / L / D

DAY 8: Jancapampa - TupaTupa Pass (4400M) - Huecrucocha (4000m)
This day we pass through several remote Andean communities, where we will be able to watch some people grazing their livestock, adobe houses, & cultivated fields, we will keep walking up gradually, then more steeply until reach Tupa-tupa Pass (4400m) from it we’ll enjoy the views of Pucajirca/Rinrijirca massif to the west, after that we will descend to our next camp at lakeside of laguna huecrococha. Overnight camp at huecrucocha. Meal: B /S / L / D

DAY 9: Huecrucocha - Alto de Puraju (4650m) - tuctu – paria (3800m).
this day we will ascend up until Alto de Pucaraju pass, at the begin on gentle traverse of the steep, at the valley head the trail winds up on several switchbacks until reach the pass, over it to be sure the view is superb with imposing of majestic Taulliraju, group of pukajircas, artezonraju and chacraraju, after that we will drop on rocky trail until tuctu grass plateau, after that we will keep walking down until paria camping spot on green lush paria valley. Overnight camp at paria valley Meal: B /S / L / D

Day 10: Paria – Colcabanba (3400m) – molinopampa(3600m)
Today can be an easy day. At first we walk down a wide meadow through a flat, green, lush valley with some sections of quenual & quisuar forest, with lovely twisted trunks and orange bark. At Huaripampa village, we will have the opportunity to meet with friendly & sociable Quechua residents including children (this day is a good day to give gifts to the children, if you have brought presents such as: pens, pencils, pencil sharpener, crayons, paints, erasers, rulers, notebooks or other school supplies. Most of kids are quite poor, they will feel delighted after receiving these things.) We will continue down until reaching the bottom the valley and cross the bridge at Colcabamba. After that we will walk up a gradual grade along a road until reaching Molinopampa campsite. Overnight camp at molinopampa. Meals: B / S / L / D

DIA 11: molinopampa – Avalancha camp (4500m)
After our hearty breakfast we will start hiking up a gradually ascending trail. As we climb, we will have gorgeous views Mount Contrahierbas to our left side, as well as several waterfalls. The trail winds up through the incredible Andean vegetation (queñual forest) until reaching the Ichic Ulta glacier lakes, a pair of sparkling lakes in the verdant Ulta Gorge. At Avalancha campsite we will enjoy observing several avalanches falling down into the lake from Contrahierbas glacier. Overnight camp at avalanche. Meals: B / S / L / D

DIA 12: avalancha – yanayacu pass (4850m) – ulta(4300m)
Today we will walk up a rock slide trail. The ascent is dramatic, as the path traverses a steep rock face until reaching the Yanayacu Pass. At the top of the pass, we will be greeted with a grandest view the summits of: Chopicalqui and Huascaran, the highest mountain in Peru. Far below sits colorful Yanacocha Lake. Once we cross the pass we will descend on a rocky trail toward Ulta valley, observing a small glacial lagoon. We will follow this trail down to the bridge where we will finish our trek. Our private transportation will be waiting to bring us to Huaraz. After a nice shower and some rest in Huaraz hotel, you can enjoy a tasty dinner in town to celebrate your trekking success, time to connect with family again via the Internet, then a good night’s rest in a real bed. WHAT TO BRING

WHAT TO BRING FOR TREKKING

    CLOTHING
  • Walking boot or hiking shoes: These are the boots you will wear on the trek over high passes, then you'll need a couple shoes of handling a bit of slippery snow and very rough and rocky trails. For example a B0 or B1 ankle-high boot.
  • For multiday treks is advisable a pair of sandals to wear around camp instead of sneakers
  • A couple of fast drying base-layer tops (made of synthetic material is preferable instead of cotton or wool t-shirt) (whatever material can be long sleeve is advisable)
  • Mid – layer (mid weight fleece or a synthetic insulation jacket (e.g primaloft) as well as full of thermal underwear to wear in the evening.
  • Wear light/medium - weight trousers that allow the free movement and will dry quickly.
  • Down jacket is nice or a micro –down jacket
  • A woolly hat and thermal gloves ( a pair polar Tec)
  • A light weight waterproof jacket shell proof ( gore - tex)
  • A light weight waterproof pants or over-trouser (Gore - Tex) are recommendable.
  • Wind proof waist coat or jacket (optional)
  • Light weight cotton or synthetic pants / trouser: for hiking in the mountains or for hiking around camp Shorts are Ok.
  • A pair of high quality sunglasses is essential (dark sport sunglasses) spectrum 3 for trekking
  • At least 3 pairs of good quality hiking socks (liner sock can be to reduce abrasion and blister.
  • Sun hat: Or baseball cap with bandanna safety pinned to it to keep the sun off your face and neck.
  • Thermal liners
  • Neck gaiter or balaclava (wool or synthetic, mid-weight) the neck gaiter is more versatile and can serve as ear band

  • CAMPING EQUIPMENT

  • Sleeping bag – 15ºC should be enough to sleep well (down or synthetic)
  • Foam sleeping pad or a therm- a – rest (prolite or NeoAir for a better night sleep) which is the best for more comfort at high camp.
  • 2 liters water bottle (Nalgene) or camelback
  • Water treatment (chlorine dioxide tablets) (micro pure) (optional)
  • Headlamp or head torch with extra batteries (we recommended all use LED technology).
  • Good quality sun cream (Sunscreen) for using around the camp
  • Lip balm

  • Pee Bottle (2) 1 Liter wide mouth bottles (Nalgene) (optional)
  • Thermos (optional) 1 Liter capacity stainless steel vacuum bottle

  • hiking steaks or trekking poles are useful a compact 3 section (leki or black diamond they are lither and durable)
  • Duffel bag or ruck sack(around 60 - 70 liters) with padlock. These duffels will be tied onto the backs of burros on the way up to Base Camp, so make sure they’re tough.
  • A 40 – 45 liters day pack to carry spare clothing, snack, camera and water to drink during the day walk.

  • PERSONAL MEDICAL KID

  • Should include: plasters, antiseptic, cream, sterile gauze and bandage, rehydration sachets, zinc oxide tape and anti-inflammatory painkillers such as ibuprofen or aspirin.
  • Bring paracetamol, and acetazolamide or Diamox for treating mild symptoms of (AMS).
  • Have loperamide is a good idea in case you get the runs
  • Antibiotic such as: ciprofloxacin or Bactrim for bacterial stomach bugs.
  • A small roll of adhesive tape, cough drops.

  • PERSONAL TOILETS

  • Toilets such us: Toothbrush, small amount of toothpaste, dental floss, contact lens fluids, a small bar of soap, and small hand towel or wash clothes.
  • On most expeditions in base camps we can supply you with a small bowl of warm washing water in the morning and afternoon.
  • A small synthetic hand towel (wash clothes) is useful for taking a sponge bath, toilet paper.
